Preserving Family Recipes and Memories: How to Create a Custom Family Cookbook

One Christmas, my mom made a family cookbook for each of her kids. It was filled with old family photos and favorite recipes passed down from grandmothers, great-grandmothers, aunts, and even family friends. It wasn’t just a cookbook—it was a storybook of our family’s food traditions.

In one of the pages, there’s a picture of Grandma Maxine in her kitchen next to her legendary apple crisp recipe. Just reading the ingredients makes me smell cinnamon and warm apples. I can still see her scooping it into bowls with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream on top. And now that it’s fall, it’s the perfect time to pass that memory on to my kids.

My mom used an 8×8-inch scrapbook with plastic sleeves—perfect for cooking without fear of spills. She created four versions of the cookbook. Each had the same recipes, but different layouts, photos, stickers, and page decorations. It was a labor of love and a beautiful way to preserve family history.

Want to Create a Bigger Family Cookbook?

My friend Megan created a large-scale family cookbook that included dozens of recipes, vintage photos, and stories. She designed it to be printed and shared with extended family across the country. I asked her to share what she learned from the process:

Q: What inspired you to create a family cookbook?

I moved to California to start a family and realized how important food was to our traditions. The recipes we used year after year were scattered across handwritten cards, envelopes, and memory. I wanted a single place to collect them and bring those memories with me.

Q: How long did it take?

Over 10 years—it became a running joke in our family! But I had a vision for something meaningful. Not just copies of recipes, but a true family heirloom.

Q: What was the hardest part?

Documenting recipes that had never been written down. Some were made from memory, so I had to track down relatives and figure out measurements together.

Q: What did you enjoy most?

Looking through hundreds of old family photos.

Q: How did your family react to the finished book?

It was overwhelming—in a good way! They didn’t expect it to be so polished or emotional.

Q: What tools helped the most?

I used Blurb.com for printing—it allowed lots of pages and great design options. For scanning old photos, I used FotoBridge.com.

Q: Any advice for others?

Label the photos! Think of future generations and take time to write who’s in them. I’m so glad my mom helped me with that part.
